Talk one on one with Joseph J. Bango, President of CAC, and you can feel his passion for the challenges his company takes on with their varied research projects. Joe received his education at the University of Bridgeport, University of New Haven, Central Connecticut State University and MIT. His CAC facility in Bethany resembles a cross between a science fiction movie and the set of CSI, with his staff working on projects in the aerospace, health and anti-terrorism fields. They are a great example of a small company leveraging partnerships to allow them to participate in cutting edge research. Joe speaks with enthusiasm as he introduces his staff which includes his father, Joseph Sr., who is Vice President.
At this time their most exciting project brings together Dr. Buzz Aldrin (former astronaut and second person to step onto the surface of the moon), Dr. John Fenn (winner of 2002 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), Dr. Stephen Fuerstenau (expert in the properties of Martian dust and former NASA-JPL scientist), Hamilton-Sundstrand's Space, Land and Sea Unit, and CAC to form what has been dubbed a "Dream Team" by Deb Santy, Director of the Connecticut Small Business Innovation Research Office (SBIR), which was formed to help small businesses in Connecticut capture federal SBIR grants. Small firms that have the ability to put together an innovative proposal, a strong work plan, and a highly regarded team, win SBIRs. This SBIR grant will allow the "Dream Team" to research and build a sophisticated air filtration prototype for possible use on the Space Station, Moon and future Mars Missions.
